When and how did you get involved with Special Olympics?
21 years ago. 2005, when I first moved here from Saskatoon. It was through word of mouth with friends and family and coworkers.
What sports do you participate in?
Swimming and bowling for right now. I used to do floor hockey and track and field, but I don't do them anymore. For right now, it's 5-pin and swimming. I like swimming because it gets your whole body moving - your legs, your arms.
What is your favourite Special Olympics experience to date?
When I went to Prince George for Provincial Games. I had a really nice time in Prince George. The Opening Ceremonies were put on by their Indigenous people, and it was great.
What are your biggest achievements in Special Olympics so far?
My biggest achievements are meeting new friends, and re-meeting old friends from different Special Olympics events. I made a lot of friends over the years. I feel happy when I see them because I didn't see them for a long time. I ask them questions like: How are you doing? What have you been doing all summer? Doing well in your training?
What competitions have you been part of recently and/or upcoming?
Swim meet in Powell River. It was pretty good, a fun swim meet. I think I came first and got two thirds. I think in my own mind I'm not quite ready yet, I have a bit more training to do because I have to work on my butterfly and my backstroke.
What would you say about Special Olympics to encourage someone to get involved?
I would say that if someone is brand new, if you want to try it, come and try it. If it's for you, it's for you, and if it's not for you, pick something else. I think it will help people in the long run to get out of the house more and make new friends.
Please tell us a little bit more about yourself! What else would you like people to know about you?
For myself, Terry, I want to let people know me better. Lot of older athletes know me really well, especially in Victoria and Campbell River area, in Special Olympics. I want to meet some of the newer athletes.
