When and how did you get involved with Special Olympics?

In 2023, a family friend presented the opportunity to get involved and said to try out one practice. I did just that, and the rest is history. I was drawn to the welcoming environment, impressive athletes, and fun that the team was having together.

Will this be your first Special Olympics Canada Games? If not, what other National Games were you part of and in what role(s)?

Yes, this will be my first Special Olympics Canada Games and I am extremely excited!

What does being part of Special Olympics Team BC 2026 mean to you?

It means being a part of something bigger than just sports - a movement to ensure sports are inclusive for everyone. It is an honour and privilege to represent BC at the games. I am very excited to be doing so along a team that I have been coaching for the past few years, as I have seen the growth they have made in their playing abilities and teamwork.

What is/are your goal(s) for National Games?

1. Ensure all athletes feel comfortable at the games.
2. Make this a memorable experience for the athletes, regardless of whether we win or lose games.
3. Meet athletes and coaches from other provinces.

What is your favourite Special Olympics experience to date?

Watching our team enjoy themselves at the dance at the provincial games in Prince George (while wearing their gold medals).

What does competing at National Games mean to your athletes? (Or, if this is your first National Games, competition in general)

This is my first National Games, but generally speaking, our athletes love competition. Regardless of the outcome, they always cheer each other on (and sometimes even the other team too). Nationals is something our athletes have talked about as a goal for 2 years now. They are extremely appreciative of the opportunity to proudly wear "BC" on their jersey.

What developments are you excited to see in your Team BC sport team leading up to National Games?

I'm excited to see an increase in both on the court and off the court team chemistry. Spending time as a team will help foster an environment of collaboration. Additionally, we are working hard to improve our skills during practices and ensuring our athletes are staying active on days we don't practice.

What would you say about Special Olympics to encourage someone to get involved?

It is simply an environment like no other. So much support and sportsmanship. The athletes are amazing and it really is a great opportunity to help make sports inclusive for all.
