When and how did you get involved with Special Olympics? 

I started with Special Olympics in 1988. 2026 marks 38 years.

Will this be your first Special Olympics Canada Games? If not, what other National Games did you compete in, and in what sports? 

I have been to eight Special Olympics. This will be my ninth.
1 National Games for track and field in Halifax, NS.
4 National Games for alpine skiing ⛷️ in Saskatoon in 1992, Calgary 1996, 
Ottawa 2000, P.E.I. 2004, and Quebec 2010.
3 National Games for softball.
2 National Games for Golf in Chippewa Creek, ON and Vancouver, BC.
In 2017, I competed at the North American Golf Championship in Seattle. 
2026 in Medicine Hat, AB will be my third attempt for golf. ⛳️

What were your results in the 2025 Special Olympics BC Summer Games? How did you feel about your performance? 

I returned back to Prince George for golf since I lifted in 1997. I played a full 18 holes. I scored a 98 to win gold.

What does being part of Special Olympics Team BC 2026 mean to you? 

All of the years as a Special Olympics athlete have helped me keep great health. 

What is your goal for these National Games? 

My goal is to bring strong leadership and bring my A-game to win my spot on Team Canada to go to Chile for the World Games.

What is your favourite Special Olympics experience to date? 

I have enjoyed all of what I have accomplished. I've had a great career.

What do you like most about the sport you will compete in at National Games? 

I have been waiting to be able to play 18 holes, my whole life.

What would you say about Special Olympics to encourage someone to get involved? 

I would encourage everyone to got involved. It has saved my life.

Please tell us a little bit more about yourself! What else would you like people to know about you?

Even though my name is Ryan Courtemanche, my nickname is 'Maddog.' I want people to know me as a great champion and amateur to Special Olympics Canada.
