When and how did you get involved with Special Olympics?

I had been involved in swimming when I was younger, and I had also helped with Special Olympics during high school. I started coaching in 2008.

Will this be your first Special Olympics Canada Games? If not, what other National Games were you part of and in what role(s)?

No - I have been to Vancouver and Antigonish. I have been a swim coach at both.

What does being part of Special Olympics Team BC 2026 mean to you?

I love being part of Special Olympics Team BC 2026. It is not just about being part of a team, but about seeing the athletes I’ve had the privilege to coach progress and thrive. Watching their hard work and dedication pay off is truly inspiring, and being able to support them on this journey is an honor.

What is/are your goal(s) for National Games?

To ensure that our athletes not only perform at their best, but also have a truly memorable experience. I hope to create an environment where they feel supported, confident, and proud of their achievements, regardless of the outcome. My last goal is to celebrate their hard work, growth, and the bonds they form as part of a team.

What is your favourite Special Olympics experience to date?

My favorite Special Olympics experience has been coaching the athletes and witnessing their growth and success. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them perform well, and even more fulfilling to stay connected with them after the National Games.

What does competing at National Games mean to your athletes? (Or, if this is your first National Games, competition in general)

For the athletes I’ve coached, going to Nationals is a reflection of their hard work and dedication. It shows that their effort has truly paid off, and it fuels their determination to continue pushing toward their goal of making Team Canada.

What developments are you excited to see in your Team BC sport team leading up to National Games?

I want the Team BC athletes to work on developing their technical skills. I also want to see their confidence and teamwork build.

What would you say about Special Olympics to encourage someone to get involved?

I would say that volunteering with Special Olympics is one of the most rewarding things you can do. The athletes have this ability to flick a switch when you are having a bad day to brighten your day with their spirited attitudes and determination. You will gain so much more than you ever anticipated, both in terms of personal growth and the joy of being part of such a positive, inspiring community with their spirited attitudes and determination.
