When and how did you get involved with Special Olympics?
I had a friend introduce me to Special Olympics in 2022 when I started coaching with our softball program in Coquitlam. As someone who has been involved in team sports my entire life, it was fantastic to have a place to continue to be involved with the sports I loved growing up. I knew after my first year that it was something that I wanted to continue to be further involved in. The athletes and the community in Coquitlam is truly special. That led me to floor hockey during the winter and now moving on to coach at my first National Games!
Will this be your first Special Olympics Canada Games? If not, what other National Games were you part of and in what role(s)?
This is my first Special Olympics Canada Games.
What does being part of Special Olympics Team BC 2026 mean to you?
It is truly special to be involved with SO Team BC 2026. When I first got involved with Special Olympics, it wasn't even something that I knew was a possibility. Being in this position now with this fantastic group of athletes is extremely exciting and rewarding. The experience so far has been incredible, and I continue to look forward to preparing for and watching our group compete at the National Games!
What is/are your goal(s) for National Games?
For a lot of our softball athletes and coaches, this is our first time attending the National Games. My hope is that we soak up all that this incredible experience has to offer, have lots of fun as a team, and out perform our expectations!
What is your favourite Special Olympics experience to date?
I think my favourite experience has been watching our team win Gold at SOBC Provincial Games. Not just because of the accomplishment, but seeing the genuine joy and sense of accomplishment on all of our athletes' faces made that experience priceless. I couldn't be more proud and grateful to coach such a great group!
What does competing at National Games mean to your athletes? (Or, if this is your first National Games, competition in general)
National Games is the opportunity of a life time. The team could not be more excited to continue to compete on a bigger stage and do it with the team that they have been involved with for years. I get questions every week about preparation and training for the games. We are all counting down the days until Medicine Hat!
What developments are you excited to see in your Team BC sport team leading up to National Games?
I have already seen another level of commitment and dedication from our athletes in improving not only their skills, but their physical health leading up to the Games. I am looking forward to watching our athletes' continued growth as a team and ongoing support for each other through this entire process.
What would you say about Special Olympics to encourage someone to get involved?
It is something that you look forward to each and every week. As someone who is still relatively new with three years under my belt, it is something that I hope to continue to do for years to come. Whenever people ask about my involvement with Special Olympics, I always encourage them to attend or participate in our programs. It is some of the most fun that you will have in your life, and the relationships that you make within the community are truly special.
