2026 SOBC Classic offers an unforgettable day of sport and inclusion

Held on June 11 at the beautiful Mayfair Lakes Golf & Country Club, the first-class fundraising golf tournament provided a full day of play and memorable moments. It was all with the goal of empowering Special Olympics BC athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  

The 2026 tournament showcased the commitment of B.C. business leaders to celebrate Special Olympics athletes and build inclusion.  

Special Olympics BC athlete Amy Nelson shared her experiences and accomplishments with the golfers, showing the life-changing impact of their generous support.  

Nelson will head to the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat, Alberta this summer, representing British Columbia with pride. She’ll be part of our province’s first-ever women’s soccer team to compete at a Special Olympics Canada Games! 

“My goals for Nationals are to meet new people, and win a gold medal – and most of all, I want to do the best that I can, represent Special Olympics Team BC with pride, and make my family and friends proud.” 

Before heading out to the greens, she shared her messages of encouragement to those participating. “I just want to thank all the golfers here today for your support. Because without your support, I and so many other people with intellectual disabilities would not have opportunities like we do now.” 

Golfers also had the opportunity to connect with Special Olympics BC athletes Hayden Metcalf, Austin Johnston, Cory Duhaime, and Amy Nelson, hearing their inspiring stories firsthand as they interacted on the course.

After a fantastic day on the fairways, golfers enjoyed the evening banquet and were inspired by Special Olympics BC – Coquitlam athlete Hayden Metcalf and his father and volunteer Andrew Metcalf, who shared their powerful family journey through Special Olympics.   

“Without your support and your donations and your commitment to Special Olympics, Hayden wouldn’t have had these opportunities. Thank you so much. … These kids, as Hayden said, sometimes they’re forgotten, they’re bullied, they’re mistreated in school because people don’t get educated about them and what they can do. Special Olympics gives them that opportunity. So thank you,” said Andrew Metcalf. 

Funds raised by the Special Olympics BC Classic empower athletes like Hayden and Amy to gain friendships, confidence, and community in the year-round Special Olympics programs that change lives and build inclusion throughout B.C.
