SOBC Volunteer Professional Development Series: Athlete Support: Behaviour 101
Special Olympics BC offers the Volunteer Professional Development Series to thank the remarkable administrative volunteers who do so much to make SOBC programs possible, and create opportunities for these amazing individuals to connect, learn, and brainstorm together.
This workshop covers positive behaviour support concepts through a neurodiversity-affirming lens, viewing behaviour as communication. Participants will explore how experiences, environments, and needs influence behaviour. It discusses the ABCs of behaviour and the functions they serve, focusing on understanding context and regulation instead of changing the person. Participants will learn respectful, proactive strategies to foster supportive environments and reduce distress. The session includes interactive activities to enhance understanding and reflection. Suitable for newcomers to social and community services, this workshop promotes compassionate, person-centered support.
