Youth Activation Council

Special Olympics BC’s Youth Activation Council is made up of young people from across the province who work together to change the world. YAC members help make their communities more respectful and inclusive by raising awareness about Special Olympics and helping everyone understand all that individuals with intellectual disabilities can do.

The vision of YAC is to create a network of youth leaders who come together to share their ideas and inspiration and then return to their communities energized to champion Special Olympics and ready to take on new projects with help and resources from SOBC and other youth. YAC members provide advice and counsel on strategies designed to reach other youth, support and promote Special Olympics BC activities in their home communities, and inspire others to get involved.

Making a difference

"Before I joined Special Olympics, I didn't really know about myself, and I only had a few friends. But now, since I joined Special Olympics, I not only know about myself, but I have lots of friends." -SOBC – Vancouver athlete Alex

"I love Special Olympics because I get to compete, and win medals, and have fun." -SOBC – Dawson Creek athlete David

"I like Special Olympics because I like to see athletes succeed." -SOBC Youth Activation Council participant Natalie

The above comments are a selection of the powerful sentiments shared by participants in SOBC's 2014 Athlete Leadership & Youth Activation Council Conference in videos they created about the impact and value of Special Olympics.
