Name: Matt Derouin
Local: Delta Sport(s): Swimming
When did you start with
Special Olympics and how did you get
involved?
I was looking for
experience while I was considering a career in public relations so
I got involved with the executive as PR Coordinator for SOBC -
Delta. I did that for about a year and a half and then as they were
recruiting for swim coaches I took that opportunity since I
lifeguard and instruct swimming.
What is your most
memorable Special Olympics experience?
Being at the Provincial
Games last summer in Abbotsford. It was really seeing fun to see
the athletes win medals and staying at the schools with
everyone.
What would you like
people to know about you?
I’ve broken
my collarbone six times! That has included (as a kid) jumping into
a pool and falling off a couple chairs. I’m just about
finished the Masters of Occupational Therapy program at
UBC.
What sport(s) do you
coach?
I’m the heads coach for swimming for SOBC
- Delta.
