Special Olympics BC offers year-round sport programs
and competitive opportunities in fourteen sports:
Summer Sports:
Winter Sports:
Special Olympics BC also offers programs specifically designed
for young athletes with an intellectual disability aged 2-18
years:
Programs are offered in 55 communities (i.e. Special Olympics
BC Locals) throughout the province. The availability
of specific sports programs within a community is based
on athlete interest as well as facility
availability.
Each program runs for a minimum of twelve weeks, at
least once a week for a minimum of an hour. The athlete:coach
ratios in Special Olympics BC programs offer
athletes more focused training. For winter sports, the athlete
to coach ratio is 3:1, for summer sports 4:1 and for
team sports 5:1.
GENERIC SPORTS PROGRAMS
In communities where there are only a few Special Olympics
athletes wishing to train in a sport, those athletes may be able to
join a generic sport club or provincial sport organization, and
train with that club/organization to compete at Special Olympics
events. These athletes would be registered with Special
Olympics BC and have a coach attend with them, but would
also benefit from the other athletes and coaches around them.
Some Special Olympics athletes also use generic sport training
to supplement their Special Olympics training, allowing them to
train more than once a week in their sport.
