The Athlete Program Assistant Workshop (APA) provides Special Olympics BC athletes with the skills needed to take on a leadership role in a weekly program as Program Assistants. Program Assistants assist the Head Coach and other athletes in a variety of areas, such as leading a proper warm-up and cool-down, setting up and taking down for drills, facilitating drills, etc.
 
Athletes attend the APA training with a Program Mentor Volunteer, a coach or team manager from the program that these athletes are hoping to get involved in. The Program Mentor Volunteer provides the Program Mentor with ongoing, follow-up support by:
  • Delegating tasks to the Program Mentor that fit with those outlined in the materials.
  • Providing support, guidance, and performance feedback to the Program Mentor.
  • Filling out an evaluation at the end of the program that outlines the successes and challenges experienced throughout the term.
