The Athlete Program Assistant Workshop (APA) provides Special
Olympics BC athletes with the skills needed to take on a
leadership role in a weekly program as Program Assistants.
Program Assistants assist the Head Coach and other
athletes in a variety of areas, such as leading a proper warm-up
and cool-down, setting up and taking down for drills, facilitating
drills, etc.
Athletes attend the APA training with a Program Mentor
Volunteer, a coach or team manager from the program that these
athletes are hoping to get involved in. The Program Mentor
Volunteer provides the Program Mentor with ongoing, follow-up
support by:

Delegating tasks to the Program Mentor that fit with those
outlined in the materials.

Providing support, guidance, and performance feedback to the
Program Mentor.

Filling out an evaluation at the end of the program that
outlines the successes and challenges experienced throughout the
term.
