Sports Celebrities Festival helps make the impossible possible

The 2017 Sports Celebrities Festival presented by Wheaton Precious Metals starred Special Olympics BC athletes centre stage alongside the entire Vancouver Canucks roster and leading B.C. sports celebrities, while raising vital funds for the Canucks for Kids Fund and SOBC.

On October 21, more than 700 participants in 26 CrossFit gyms across Canada helped make a difference by conquering CrossFit 24 to support Special Olympics.

Meet Athlete Betty Colk

Special Olympics BC – Chilliwack’s Betty Colk is a friendly, outgoing athlete who says SOBC has helped her improve her fitness, gain confidence, and make friends.

“Special Olympics brings out the best in me!” she says.

Colk participates in 5-pin bowling and bocce, and says the athletes and coaches in these programs are enthusiastic and supportive. They all do a great job of cheering each other on.

Did you know that sleep plays an important role in making sure you are ready for competition? The quality and amount of sleep an athlete gets can have a big impact on athletic performance. Deep sleep, otherwise known as REM sleep, provides energy to both the brain and the body. If sleep is cut short, the body doesn’t have time to process your memories and release hormones that are key to physical recovery.

Special Olympics BC – Sunshine Coast Treasurer Helene Johnston started volunteering with SOBC after watching one of her niece’s rhythmic gymnastics performances. Seeing her niece’s joy as she completed her routine showed Johnston the importance of SOBC’s empowering programs and inspired her to get involved in her community.
