SOBC’s Paige Norton, Donna Bilous win 2017 Special Olympics Canada National Awards

Special Olympics Canada has announced the 2017 national award winners, and we're delighted to congratulate all the deserving recipients, including Female Athlete of the Year Paige Norton of Special Olympics BC – Abbotsford and Female Coach of the Year Donna Bilous, SOBC Region 3 Coordinator and SOBC – Abbotsford coach!

These awards recognize the athletes, coaches, and volunteers who have exemplified the spirit and essence of the Special Olympics movement throughout the year. Award winners will be honoured during SOC’s 2017 National Awards evening on November 16 at Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto. 

Female Athlete of the Year – Paige Norton (Abbotsford, B.C.)
Norton has been a Special Olympics athlete for 13 years, competing in an impressive eight sports (athletics, basketball, bocce, golf, soccer, softball, speed skating, and swimming) as well as participating in Club Fit. She is also an active member of Special Olympics BC’s Performance Program in speed skating, athletics, and aquatics. Norton qualified for a spot on Team Canada 2017 to compete in speed skating at the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games. In Austria, she won a gold medal in the women’s 1000m event as well as a silver medal in the women’s 500m event.

Female Coach of the Year – Donna Bilous (Abbotsford, B.C.)
Bilous has been an active coach with Special Olympics BC for 13 years, sharing her expertise in speed skating and youth soccer on many levels. She has given her time and expertise to the Special Olympics movement and the sport community in Abbotsford as well as Canadian speed skating through many roles. Currently, Bilous is a member of the Special Olympics International Speed Skating Rules committee, serves as the Special Olympics BC Provincial Technical Advisor for speed skating and as SOBC’s Region 3 Coordinator, and is a leader in developing Performance Program camps for coaches in British Columbia, to name a few of her many contributions. Bilous served as the Head Coach of speed skating for Team Canada at the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria and provided outstanding guidance and support for this hardworking group.
