Meet Volunteer Leslie Bowling

21 August 2017

Special Olympics BC – Abbotsford’s Leslie Bowling says getting involved with SOBC is the most rewarding decision she has ever made.

An enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer, Bowling serves as SOBC – Abbotsford’s Volunteer Coordinator and is the Head Coach of her Local’s 5-pin bowling and bocce programs. She says spending time with Special Olympics athletes is a joyful experience that can make her feel good even when she is having a bad day.

Bowling would like others to know SOBC – Abbotsford is full of caring, supportive coaches and volunteers who work hard to provide athletes with the best opportunities possible.

When did you start with Special Olympics, and how did you get involved?

I started volunteering 18 years ago after my daughter signed up as an athlete. I started as a spectator and then decided it would be fun to volunteer. It has been the most rewarding decision I have ever made.

What has been your most memorable Special Olympics experience?

My most memorable times with Special Olympics have definitely got to be going to Provincial and National Games. I got the chance to meet so many wonderful, dedicated volunteers from all over B.C. and Canada. As a result, I have made many friends I otherwise wouldn’t have met.

What is your favourite thing about being involved with SOBC?

My favourite thing about being involved with SOBC is the unconditional love that the athletes have for the coaches and volunteers. I can have a bad day at work, and I go to volunteer and am greeted with hugs from the athletes. How can you be in a bad mood after that?

What would you like others to know about SOBC – Abbotsford?

I would like others to know that SOBC – Abbotsford is not only a sports organization, it is a diverse family filled with the most amazing coaches, assistant coaches, and program volunteers who are dedicated to providing first-class sports training to each and every athlete regardless of skill in order for them to be the best they can be.
