SOBC invited to be part of MLS WORKS ESPN Special Olympics All-Star Match

27 July 2017

Thanks to our friends at Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Major League Soccer (MLS), Special Olympics BC has been invited to be part of the 2017 MLS WORKS ESPN Special Olympics Unified Sports All-Star Soccer Match! SOBC – Abbotsford soccer player Bradly Barnett and coach Roshan Gosal will be part of the experiences in Chicago July 31 to August 2.

MLS WORKS and ESPN host this program and invited 44 delegates this year representing all 22 MLS clubs. SOBC – Abbotsford midfielder Barnett will take the field alongside Whitecaps FC Residency midfielder Jonas Hakkinen. Gosal will provide support as a coach/chaperone.

The teams will take the pitch in an East vs. West matchup on Tuesday, August 1, at 2:30 p.m. PT at Chicago’s Toyota Park. They will also be part of an MLS WORKS volunteer experience and will watch the MLS All-Star Game on August 2 where the best in the MLS will face Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The match will be streamed live on MLSsoccer.com, MLS’ Facebook page and MLS’ YouTube account, and on the Special Olympics International Facebook page.

Barnett is a very active Special Olympics athlete who shines in anything with a ball. He plays soccer, basketball, floor hockey, 5- and 10-pin bowling, and softball, and he plans to add athletics and swimming next year. Barnett has been a Special Olympics athlete for three years and has been playing soccer ever since he could walk. On the field he’s very active as he loves to run and frequently finds the back of the net. Barnett is also a fan of WWE and has tried a wide range of sports include BMX biking.

Gosal has been involved in Special Olympics for five years, both as a coach and an outstanding advocate for the Spread the Word to End the Word campaign and Special Olympics in his community. He enjoys seeing the personal development of all the Special Olympics athletes at their different levels of play. Soccer is his favourite sport because of the requirement for teamwork and the accessibility to all people. Fun facts: Gosal trained in karate for 13 years and competed in four provincial games, and he has climbed to the top of Machu Picchu.

Meet Jonas Hakkinen

ExtraTime Radio hosts David Gass and Andrew Wiebe will provide play-by-play analysis and color commentary on the live stream. MLSsoccer.com personalities Calen Carr and Susannah Collins will serve as sideline reporters, interviewing players and coaches throughout the match.
