Meet a Sponsor: Silver Wheaton

30 March 2017

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, Special Olympics BC programs help thousands of individuals with intellectual disabilities celebrate personal achievement and gain confidence, skills, and friendship. Here we look at how Silver Wheaton has helped SOBC empower athletes to enrich their lives through the joy of sport.

In 2006, Silver Wheaton started their support as a Presenting Sponsor of the Sports Celebrities Festival. This inspiring and interactive event has raised over $4.4 million to date for Special Olympics BC and the Canucks for Kids Fund, helping athletes to gain confidence, acceptance, and pride through sport, and also providing vital opportunities, resources, and care to children and families throughout B.C.

In addition to their sponsorship of the Sports Celebrities Festival, Silver Wheaton has been an ongoing and significant sponsor of the Goldcorp Invitational Golf Tournament since 2009. Silver Wheaton also stepped forward to extend their support of Special Olympics athletes as a sponsor of the Special Olympics Canada 2014 Summer Games in Vancouver.

Silver Wheaton CEO Randy Smallwood generously supports SOBC through his efforts as a Director since 2012. In September 2016, he took on the role of Board Chair.

Smallwood also took the time to serve as Honorary General Manager for Team BC at the 2016 Special Olympics Canada Games in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Smallwood attended team training camps before the Games, and travelled to Newfoundland to cheer on athletes at their events.

“I very much enjoyed being part of the Games and was honoured to be selected for this role,” says Smallwood. “I feel that B.C. has one of the best Special Olympics programs in Canada, and Silver Wheaton is proud to support their work.”

We are so grateful for Silver Wheaton’s dedication to Special Olympics BC and thank them for being an important and steadfast supporter of our work. They have truly made a difference to SOBC and athletes with intellectual disabilities across the province.
