Meet Athlete Lorraine Dick

22 March 2017

When Special Olympics BC – Williams Lake started back up in late 2015 after going on hiatus for a couple of years, Lorraine Dick was one of the first athletes to sign up.

Dick says she likes Special Olympics because it lets her be part of a community and it “feels good to be part of a team.”

Dick participates in 5-pin bowling and soccer with SOBC – Williams Lake, and in the past she has also taken part in floor hockey, snowshoeing, soccer, and softball.

Dick’s favourite sport is 5-pin bowling and she loves getting strikes. Her most memorable moment with SOBC is bowling a turkey (three strikes in a row). She said the accomplishment made her feel very good, and all her friends were very happy for her, which made her feel even better.

“I love having fun with my friends,” Dick says.

SOBC – Williams Lake Local Coordinator Susan Means says Dick is a friendly, helpful athlete who is well-liked by her teammates.

“She is a very busy lady and loves to be involved and included in activities with peers,” Means says.

Dick does janitorial work at Safeway and the Williams Lake Association for Community Living, and also has a job doing vehicle detailing. Dick says she likes her jobs because they keep her busy and help her pay her bills.

Dick loves to support SOBC and she enjoys volunteering at her Local’s fundraising events, including for the Staples Canada Give a Toonie Share a Dream campaign.

Dick will be attending the SOBC Athlete Leadership Conference in Richmond, which will run from March 31 to April 2. Athletes attending the conference will have opportunities to develop their leadership skills and public-speaking abilities, and Dick says she is excited to learn new things.
