Gearing up for the Games: Photographer Crystal Daley

9 June 2013

At the young age of 21, Crystal Daley is already an active Special Olympics BC – Langley athlete, a volunteer at the Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association, and an exceptional photographer.

Crystal has been involved in Special Olympics for nearly eight years, and participates in curling and bocce. Born and raised in Langley, she is excited that the Special Olympics BC Summer Games is coming to her hometown.

Her photography talents led to SOBC – Langley asking her to serve as their head photographer, and she is also going to be behind the lens for the Games as a one of the volunteer photographers capturing all the moments of inspiration, achievement, and joy.

In addition to being a self-employed photographer and busy Special Olympics athlete, Crystal has been a longtime volunteer for the Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association.

Crystal started photography in high school and has learned to embrace techniques she has never done before. She was ecstatic when approached to become SOBC Langley’s head photographer. Her passion for capturing memories has led her to receive her diploma in photography from the Photography Institute in Vancouver. In fact, she dreams of going further as a Special Olympics photographer, hoping to one day become a photographer at the World Games.

“I like that in this organization [Special Olympics], everyone is friendly and nice to all the athletes. They have been so helpful not just to me, but other athletes who have difficulties with sports,” Crystal says.

Although she is definitely rooting for the Langley team, she is most excited to see other athletes from other communities, and hopes that everyone does their best in the Games.

Crystal says, “I have always learned that if you work really hard, you will somehow get something in return. Where you help out as much as you can, it will be very rewarding. My motivation is other people. It makes me feel great having to try and help others, especially those with disabilities.”

During spare time, Crystal likes to stay active and take her dog out for a walk, read, listen to music, and hang out with her friends.
