2012 Torch Run just one month away

9 May 2012

Special Olympics BC athlete Pat Johnson has been lacing up with the BC Law Enforcement Torch Run for roughly five years, running hundreds of kilometres through Lower Mainland communities to support the law enforcement personnel who, in turn, are supporting Special Olympics by taking to the streets to raise awareness and funds for this inspiring movement.

The 2012 Torch Run is just under a month away, set to light up nearly 30 communities around B.C. in an inspiring display on June 8. Lower Mainland communities will be able to see Pat and company bearing the flame through their streets June 5 to 8.

Pat runs every step of the four-day Lower Mainland Torch Run, beginning in Abbotsford on the Wednesday and winding through 14 communities before ending up in Delta at the journey’s end, logging more than 100 kilometres. Pat hits the pavement alongside dedicated law enforcement personnel such as Sgt. Joanne Wild of the Vancouver Police Department and Cst. Erin Gray of the Delta Police Department, who also run the entire length of the Lower Mainland run, as well as Torch Run members who power the sections in their own communities.

Pat is the figure frequently leading the charge for the contingent of Lower Mainland Torch Runners, setting a brisk pace at the head of the pack and proudly keeping step with the flame.

The Torch Run “makes me happy,” Pat says.

Pat is a Special Olympics BC – Vancouver athlete who participates avidly in his local track and field program once a week, and runs four more times per week on his own. By his estimates, he has run just over 50 full and half marathons. “I love running. I meet lots of people,” he says.

Pat says he is grateful to the law enforcement personnel who give their time and energy to support Special Olympics BC. He has a message for everyone: “come out and run!”

Join Pat and the 2012 BC Law Enforcement Torch Run on June 5 to 8! Register as a law enforcement runner, or support your local run by donating and/or coming out to cheer on the day.
