The Grassroots Coach Award will be awarded to a coach who works
tirelessly to ensure that all athletes regardless of their ability
level are provided with opportunities to train, improve and
compete. This coach emphasizes fair play and good sportsmanship and
ensures that all athletes feel included and valued. This coach
recognizes the unique gifts of each athlete and has the ability to
form an exceptional bond with the athletes who require a unique
approach from their coach.
2009 GRASSROOTS COACH AWARD RECIPIENT-
MICHELLE COOPER
From Victoria, this year's Grassroots Coach Award recipient is
Michelle Cooper. She has made a tremendous impact in their local in
providing athletes the opportunity to train by recognizing all of
their individual needs. As head coach for rhythmic gymnastics in
her local, she has implemented a dance component that brought her
athletes of different abilities and levels together
creating a more cohesive team. She has also challenged her athletes
to stay active over the summer by empowering the athletes to create
their own routines for the summer and demonstrating them on the
first day of practice in the fall.
Additionally, Michelle coordinates the coaching education
opportunities in her local ensuring their coaches are aware of the
courses available and that they complete them in order to meet
requirements. She also arranges a series of clinics for athletes
and coaches to ensure both parties have the training they need to
perform to the best of their ability. Also a promoter of healthy
living, she gathers athletes about once a month to talk about
managing stress, nutrition, and fitness, and encourages athletes to
learn how to be respectful to themselves and others. Thank you
